The purpose of this assignment is deepening your understanding of fact-checking processes. For this assignment, you have to choose a fact-checker site or organization and analyze and reflect on the processes. You may choose one of the following sites, or another of your choosing with the instructor’s approval: AP Fact Check, The Washington Post Fact Checker, PolitiFact, AFP FactCheck, Snopes.
The main text of your paper should be in three sections, as detailed below:
1. Identify: Choose among the fact-checker sites or organizations that we have reviewed or the one that you follow independently. Please include at least three examples of fact-checked stories the site has published, with links, that back up your choice.
2. Analyze: Present a critical review of the fact-checking processes for the site or organization that you have chosen. How do they fact check claims? How do they communicate their fact-checking process and rating system to their audience? How thorough is the evidence they present to their audience?
3. Summarize: Reflect on the overall fact-checking processes and outline your thoughts on the usefulness of the site or organization in debunking Internet rumors, misinformation and fake news. Do you find this style of journalism to be more, less or equally as effective as more traditional news articles? What impact do you think this site and its approach has on public trust?
The main text of the paper should be no less than TWO and not more than THREE double-spaced pages. You will want to draw on material learned in our lectures and reading as part of your analysis and summary.
Your assignment should include the following:
1. Title page (no abstract necessary)
2. Your 2-3 double-spaced pages of main text
3. Links to digital media sites and examples
Submission: Submit your assignment via Canvas prior to the start of class on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Late assignments will be subject to the late policy in the course syllabus.
